21st Century Skills for 21st Century Students !!!

About us!

The Africa Virtual School (AVS) was founded in February of 2008 as the first regional school of the World Virtual School, in order to serve students of all backgrounds with the highest quality online courses, at the lowest cost possible.

The goal of AVS is to offer equitable, quality education to all students, regardless of age, race, gender, ethnic, religious, or cultural background, via the internet so that they may join the global social, cultural and economic environment.

To date, twenty  African countries have joined us and and are in the process of creating their own virtual schools. If you, or an organization in your region would like to join our group and receive access to free, high quality online courses in both an American Diploma Program, a British Curriculum, or an International Diploma Program, please contact us at admin@africa-virtual-school.com.

Courses are offered free of charge to AVS and WVS students by the Hawking Foundation, Inc, a non-profit organization registered in the state of Georgia in the United States. Courses can be offered in 30 different languages and include Rosetta Stone Language Courses, core diploma courses, Advanced Placement, International Diploma courses, remedial, ESL, computer technology, and career-technical tracks in more than 25 fields.  Highly qualified instructors are provided through the virtual classroom for assistance in all areas. Additional course providers are being sought to expand our curriculum and programs for member countries at the lowest price possible.

Philosophy, Objectives, and Curriculum

The World Virtual  School believes that all students, regardless of ethnic origin, gender, race, age, religious affiliation, sexual preference, or disability, have the basic right to participate in the global cultural and economic community. In order to do this, all people have the right to a basic, equitable, and accessible education.  World Virtual  School staff and instructors believe that all human beings have the right to non-discrimination, equality, fairness and universality, and that these rights apply to everyone, everywhere, and always, in keeping with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations. These rights are reflected in World Virtual  School's daily practices, curriculum, and procedures.

The World Virtual  School  believes that the struggle for equality in human rights, and in education, is an ongoing struggle and is of enduring relevance. Human rights are a common inheritance of universal values that transcend cultures and traditions. The World Virtual  School’s goals are to assist in making equality in education a reality in the 21st century through offering an international diploma entirely over the Internet. The World Virtual  School uses state-of-the-art technology and integrates 21st Century Skills, as defined by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills. The World Virtual  School actively promotes intercultural and international awareness through all its programs.

The World Virtual  School is committed to promoting international and inter-cultural experiences for its students and encourages collaboration between students and instructors in the classroom and through the exercise of global citizenship. The World Virtual  School will provide for such services as are required to support its program offerings and will ensure that all activities are operated in a manner that assures the safety and comfort of its students. All programs and activities shall be characterized by fairness and mutual respect among individuals and between groups.

The World Virtual  School staff and Board Members are of an international nature, so as to reflect the ideas, opinions, and cultural values of a global community.

Curriculum:

The World Virtual  School’s curriculum reflects the school’s philosophy, objectives, and policies, and is created with a global aspect in mind to encourage international and inter-cultural experiences for its students. Curriculum is created using Bloom’s Taxonomy and Gagne’s Events of Instruction, addressing all different learning styles. Assessment is done in many different areas and by varying methods, including the following question types: True/False, Multiple Choice, Fill-in-the-Blank, Matching, Map Recognition, Short Answer, and Essay so that all learning styles and abilities are addressed.

Curriculum design provides for the varied developmental, academic, social, physical, and emotional needs of the students and students are encouraged to participate in the social atmosphere provided by The World Virtual  School’s infrastructure and course structure. The World Virtual School offers traditional “on-track” curriculum, as well as remedial, Advanced Placement and International courses.

Curriculum is created in a hierarchal manner so that students build on prior knowledge and participate in project based learning as they progress through their courses. Cross-curricular and cross-cultural activities are included with every lesson so that students better comprehend the global influence of individual disciplines.

The curriculum utilizes the cultural diversity of its host country (The United States) and the school community to enhance the educational experiences of its students. Students are encouraged to be life long learners and create friendships and network opportunities that last a lifetime.
